Restoration

At Makoa Quest, restoration is an active expression of care, respect, and responsibility. It is how we remember our connection to place and participate in the healing of both land and people.
Agricultural restoration
We also engage in restoration work of Maui’s farmlands, where we focus on replanting native species, managing invasive growth, and applying regenerative practices to support soil health and ecological diversity in the uplands.
Fishpond restoration
We work in collaboration with Aoʻao O Nā Loko Iʻa O Maui to support the revival of historic loko iʻa, Hawaiian fishponds. Through stone wall rebuilding, removal of invasive coastal plant species, and cultivation of native seaweeds and marine vegetables, we contribute to the health of the nearshore ecosystem while learning the practices passed down by generations of Hawaiian fishpond stewards.
These efforts are more than physical work. They are opportunities to reconnect with ancestral knowledge, embody kuleana, and participate in restoring the natural systems that sustain life on Maui. Every stone placed and every plant tended is a step toward resilience, reciprocity, and cultural continuity.
Want to get involved?
Through our restoration programs, we invite community members, schools, and visitors to take part in meaningful work that leaves a lasting impact on both the ʻāina and the self.
